Here is some essential information about visa extension and visa renewal in Vietnam that you should know.
1. Visa Extension
Visa extension is the process of extending the period of your current visa. This means that you can continue to stay in a foreign country without having to leave the country or apply for a new visa. Previously, e-visa could be extended or renewed in Viet Nam, but unfortunately these services has been has been currently suspended by the government until further notice.
Currently, only the following visa type can be extended or renewed:
- Vietnam business visa, and
- Vietnam 5-year visa exemption certificate which is still valid but its permitted stay duration,i.e 180 days, ends soon.
2. Renewal Visa
Visa Renewal is the process of applying for a new visa after your current visa has expired or is about to expire. This is a suitable option if you have an expired visa or are unable to extend your current visa.
Visa Renewal Process:
Step 1: Prepare documents for to the process. Contents and number of documents:
- Passport or valid international travel document or permanent residence permit issued by a relevant foreign authority to Vietnamese people residing abroad;
- Application form for visa exemption certificate with 02 photos (1 photo attached to the application form);
- Visa exemption certificate, in case of loss, there must be a loss notice;
- A certified copy of the original or accompanied by the original for comparison with documents proving the content that needs to be adjusted in the visa exemption certificate.
– Number of documents: 01 (one) set.
– Name of application form: Application form for re-issuance of a visa exemption certificate (NA9).
Step 2: Submit the application to one of the following agencies of the Immigration Department – Ministry of Public Security. After receiving and reviewing the application, the immigration officer will make the following decision:
- If the application meets the requirements, the immigration officer will issue a receipt and return it to the applicant.
- If the application does not meet the requirements, the applicant must continue to complete the application.
Step 3: Receive the results. The person who comes to receive the results gives the receipt to the officer who returns the results and signs the receipt. The processing time is usually 05 working days.
Conditions for renewal visa :
- Have a passport or international travel document valid for at least 01 year;
- Enter Vietnam with a visa exemption certificate and are residing in Vietnam;
- Documents proving that the person is residing abroad and the foreigner is the spouse or child of a Vietnamese person residing abroad or of a Vietnamese citizen;
- Not subject to temporary exit suspension as prescribed in Article 28 of the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam.
